SAMENVATTING 

Doel:

• Ontwerp en ontwikkeling (praktijkrijp maken) van een innovatief jaarrond melkvee-houderijsysteem waarbij diergezondheid en welzijn centraal staat door dieren in een vaste familiegroep/kudde te houden, het kalf bij de koe te laten zogen en de dieren niet te onthoornen.
• De ontwikkeling van veterinaire en zootechnische kennis, praktische oplossingen en vaardigheden met betrekking tot dit nieuwe houderijsysteem op gebied van diergezondheid, voedselveiligheid en dierenwelzijn.
• Kennisopbouw maatschappelijke acceptatie en perceptie nieuwe houderijsysteem.
• Kennisverspreiding

Werkwijze:

• Eind 2007 wordt eerste houderij ontwerp gepresenteerd.
• Eind 2008 wordt definitieve ontwerp gepresenteerd met structuurbeschrijving van de nodige technische hulpmiddelen.
• Realisatie van het systeem op 5 praktijkbedrijven en 1 proefbedrijf, start 2009. Financiering moet 2008 rond komen.
• Halverwege 2009, go/no go haalbaarheid van het systeem.
• Monitoring, ontwikkeling en onderzoek nieuwe houderijsysteem start 2009 eind 2012 (of langer) Aparte studies met verschillende financiers voor deelonderzoeken.

Resultaten:

• Innovatief houderijconcept ontwerp waarbij het dier centraal wordt gesteld in contrast met het huidige systeem waarbij de techniek bepalend is (eind 2008). Definitief ontwerp voor verschillende praktijkbedrijven en 1 proefbedrijf.
• Realisatie van het concept op proefbedrijf als voorbeeld en “leer”bedrijf om verder te ontwikkelen en uiteindelijk praktijkrijp te maken (eind 2008). Communicatieplan om activiteiten van het project kenbaar te maken.
• Ervaring van nieuwe houderijsysteem. Voorbeeldbedrijven als inspiratiebron voor de sector en consument. Kennis betreffende haalbaarheid, arbeidstechnische en economische consequenties van het nieuwe systeem. Nieuwe kennis mbt diergezondheid, welzijn en voedselveiligheid in het nieuwe systeem (2009-2012 eventueel vervolg).

SUMMARY

Project title: Family Herd

Description problem/question: In the current dairy farm system many health and welfare problems are encountered. There are already many initiatives to improve these situations and to introduce new types of management concerning animal welfare, especially within organic farming. Some farmers experiment with keeping dry cows together with the lactating cows (no group changing), some keep the calf and mother together for some months so suckling the mother facilitated and others keep horned animals. Within the loose housing system it is still difficult to adjust the management to minimize problems. There is a growing need for a new farming system in which attention is paid to the wishes of the cow. In order to develop a whole new system, research should be done to investigate all the components that are involved and to find solutions to the existing problems.

Research objectives:

• Developing a design for a new farming system for dairy cattle based on the needs of the animal by using a methodical designing process (2007-2008).
• Building and realising a test location of the final design (2008-2009).
• Monitoring Herd health and welfare in the on farm situation compared to the current housing systems as well as economic aspects, management and production (2009-2012).

Results and products:

• 2007 preliminary design of new farming system for dairy farming in which all groups are kept together, the calves suckle their mothers at least the first three months and all animals keep their horns.
• 2008 Final design, building plan and handbook for realisation of the system.
• 2009-2012 reports, scientific papers, of results of the new developed on farm situation.
