SAMENVATTING
Doel: De hoofddoelstelling van dit project is om in de melkveesector inspirerende en baanbrekende concepten op houderij- en bedrijfsniveau te realiseren in nauwe samenhang met vernieuwingen op het niveau van de structurerende omgeving (keten, markt, samenwerkingspartners).
Werkwijze: In 2008 heeft de uitwerking plaatsgevonden van vier structurele ontwerprichtingen. In 2009 zal rondom deze ontwerpsporen specifieke netwerken van boeren en anderen worden georganiseerd op deelthema's (bv. krachtvoer, kunstmest, methaan, vloeren, ruimte).
Resultaten:

Vier concepten voor samenhangende gehelen van houderij, bedrijf en keten, die beloftevol zijn t.a.v. een aantal hardnekkige duurzaamheidsproblemen en aantrekkingskracht hebben vanwege positieve neveneffecten; definitief op te leveren in februari 2009.

Nieuwe allianties van actoren rond deze nieuwe concepten voor houderij & keten, waarin eigenaarschap aantoonbaar bij anderen dan onderzoekers ligt; en institutionele vorm voor eigenaarschap van de resultaten.

Inspirerende bijdrage aan veranderende geest van ondernemerschap in veehouderij, waarin het accent meer op innovatie, meerwaardecreatie en samenwerking, dan op kostprijsreductie ligt.

Netwerken van mensen en partijen tbv agendering van duurzaamheiduitdagingen in de melkveehouderijsector, zo is er o.a. verbinding met de innovatieagenda melkveehouderij.
SUMMARY
Project title: Design and implementation of integrated sustainable dairy husbandry concepts using a reflexive design method.
Description problem/question: Sustainable development in animal production and food chains hampers due to increased costs of new technology and systems, fixed structures within chains and cultural aspects.
Research objectives: This project aims to break through or even solve persistent problems related to sustainability in dairy production chains (feature 1) with a mullet-stakeholder character (feature 2) where knowledge intensive solutions (feature 3) and motivation and driving forces of stakeholders will maximally be used (feature 4). The approach is characterized by interaction, identification of deeper needs and demands and interactive design processes and the assumption that this will provide drivers for private parties to help and enable sustainable development of animal production systems and food chains.
Results and products:

Insight and knowledge concerning the broad range of sustainability issues in the dairy sector: an agenda setting paper, a brief of requirements (BoR) of the dairy cow and a related welfare model to assess the quality of husbandry systems, a BoR of environmental issues, the farmer and citizens/consumers. Complete designs of a dairy system that show how the needs and requirements can be combined and fulfilled, that can serve as a positive impulse for change and new initiatives in practice and science.
